Eric, played by our Alex was chosen as the 2th best among the 50 best vampires by SFX:

Eric the Viking. Once a phrase that immediately meant “flop comedy from the Monty Python guy”. Now it means, “Top Nordic vampire hottie.” Bill was supposed to be the alpha vampire on True Blood, but – although far from unpopular – he was eclipsed by his blond nightclub owner boss in the popularity stakes (if “stakes” isn’t too sensitive a word to use). As in so many other cases (Spike and Damon, for instance) he benefitted from the fact that he didn’t have to be the nice guy. Far from it – he’s an utter git, chaining Lafayette to a slave wheel, and tricking Sookie into drinking his blood. Not to mention all the killing. But it’s more than that. Eric is just so inherently cool. So cool it doesn’t matter if he does a bit of killing while getting his hair dyed; or if he cries when his maker dies; or if he wears a shell suit. He remains untouchable cool. Hell, he’s survived centuries with the name Eric. That’s how cool he is.

  • The star of True Blood and Lars Von Trier’s upcoming Melancholia talks with the filmmaker about the Swedish conquest of Hollywood, national differences in etiquette, and why Swedes get so much sex.

What is it about Sweden that is making this far-flung country of less than 10 million people so culturally relevant right now? From Robyn and the Knife to the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Sweden has leaped ahead of its European neighbors and infiltrated America’s mammoth entertainment machine. We invited Alexander Skarsgård, best known for his role in HBO’s lusty drama True Blood, to sit down with director Jonas Åkerlund — whose seminal videos have included Madonna’s “Ray of Light,” Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” and Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi,” (which starred a then–largely unknown Skarsgård as Gaga’s paramour) — to help answer the question.

Out: As Swedes abroad, both working in the entertainment industry, you must feel like the go-to spokespeople for Sweden.

Alexander Skarsgård: I love my country. I always love talking about it, especially as an expat. When you live there you bitch about everything, but when you move away, all you remember is how amazing and wonderful it is. You remember all the sunny days and forget the rainy days.

Jonas Åkerlund: It was very rare to hear about Sweden, period, when I moved to Los Angeles in 1996. You were still mixed up with Switzerland. Now there’s Swedish music everywhere, actors and directors, everything, everywhere. And it didn’t used to be like that. You were very happy and proud when you heard Ace of Base on the radio.

Skarsgård: Not to mention all the songwriters and producers, as well as the musicians. Every other song on Billboard seems to be produced or written by a Swede.

Åkerlund: The one profession that was left behind was filmmaking, which is now catching up a little. Music and fashion has been out there for a while, but lately I’ve also begun to notice Swedish co-producers and directors working abroad.

Skarsgård: The reason I went to L.A. a few years ago was because the young interesting filmmakers didn’t get a chance to tell their stories or do their movies because the older generation, who were pretty mediocre filmmakers, were the only ones making movies in Sweden. That’s changed so much now. I’m excited about going back to Sweden to work with young, cool Swedish filmmakers. It’s really a vibrant industry. And now, for the first time, there are a lot of Swedes working on Hollywood projects, often on super low-budget films.

Åkerlund: But it becomes a trend — everyone wants a Swede now. Getting that opportunity is one thing, but living up to it or holding onto it is another thing.

Skarsgård: Exactly, we’re like the flavor of the month. Next month it will be Finland.

Åkerlund: Oh, never say that. Never Finland. It’s interesting, though, Alex. I met you at the Chateau Marmont. We looked around and there were, like, 10 Swedes around us, and not one Finn, no Danes. Wherever you go there are Swedes. But I rarely meet other Scandinavians.

If you’re already jonesing for more Eric Northman, don’t panic.

Alexander Skarsgård is a very busy boy these days, and though he won’t be biting into any hot young thangs for a while, the Swedish stud was happy to chat about his other upcoming projects, Straw Dogs and Battleship, with Men’s Journal.

But biz aside, we were way more interested in A.Skars’ sex talk. Especially when it came to a certain costar’s private parts…

Unfortunately, we’re not talking about Stephen Moyer—or any of his True Blood castmates.

We’re talking about the prevamp days, when Alex starred alongside James Ransone in Generation Kill. And the two got pretty comfortable with each other. If you take a listen to some of the DVD commentary, you get gems such as James spilling on Alex’s junk: “It’s huge, dude. Don’t be embarrassed.” Alex then asks, “My ass?” James responds, “No, your c–k.”

    Uh, come again, boys?

“We have the highest respect for each other’s penises,” Alex told Men’s Journal about the convo. “We were in the desert for a looong time.”

We’d love to hear the whole story, Alex (and if this have anything to do with Kate Bosworth’s recent departure?).

Tho we’re thinking he’s going to play coy, as he did with all other subjects of sex in the mag. When they asked him about losing his virginity, the dude joked, “That was 2008, I think. Best eight seconds of my life.”

And when they asked him about being named Sweden’s Sexiest Man five times running, Skars laughed, “Every single day, I wake up and look in the mirror and think, Five times, mother–ker. Five times.”

That said, he’s happy to talk about his boob-tube alter ego’s adventures between the sheets.

“I think he’s just tried everything there is to try,” Alex dishes on Eric’s dude-on-dude action. “After 1,000 years, maybe he’s just tired of the p—y for a while.”

So perhaps we’ll get some more male lovin’ next season, now that Sookie’s dumped him and all?

Here’s one thing to keep in mind: Skarsgård doesn’t want to only be known for those steamy sex scenes. “You tend to get a lot of offers that are, like, the hot guy,” Alex says. “And those parts aren’t very fun. I hope there’s something more to me than my pecs.”

There is, of course. You’ve also got your six-pack!

We’ll add better quality Scans as soon as we find them.
